Werribee Open Range Zoo

Victoria's Open Range Zoo at Werribee

The extensive grounds of Werribee Open Range Zoo, developed around the picturesque Werribee River, are home to a range of animals from the grasslands of Africa, Asia, North America and Australia, including rhinos, hippos, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, monkeys and meerkats.

The savanna-like conditions are designed to resemble the natural habitats of the animals, which roam freely and provide visitors with a truly memorable wildlife encounter.

Animals can be seen on a wildlife safari, which provides superb opportunities for up-close-and-personal encounters. Conducted by trained guides, tours give visitors an intimate and informed interpretation of the animals, their features and behaviour. Taking visitors through the African savanna, where rhino, giraffe, zebra and other animals share the magnificent riverflood plain, tours also include a trip to the African waterhole, Australia’s only drive-through hippo exhibit.

As well, visitors can explore the local grasslands of the Western Basalt Plains on the Volcanic Plains Walk, where they can experience the evolving re-creation of these endangered grasslands (less than one per cent of remnant grasslands remain in Victoria), and enjoy views into the Australian exhibit, with kangaroos, emus and wallabies.
